Isaiah 37:33-38:6

³³ “Therefore Yahweh says concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither will he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it. ³⁴ By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come to this city,’ says Yahweh. ³⁵ ‘For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.’” ³⁶ Then Yahweh’s angel went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. ³⁷ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went away, returned to Nineveh, and stayed there. ³⁸ As he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place. ¹ In those days was Hezekiah sick and near death. Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, came to him, and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Set your house in order, for you will die, and not live.’” ² Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to Yahweh, ³ and said, “Remember now, Yahweh, I beg you, how I have walked before you in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in your sight.” Hezekiah wept bitterly. ⁴ Then Yahweh’s word came to Isaiah, saying, ⁵ “Go, and tell Hezekiah, ‘Yahweh, the God of David your father, says, “I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life. ⁶ I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city.

Genesis 13:12-18

¹² Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom. ¹³ Now the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners against Yahweh. ¹⁴ Yahweh said to Abram, after Lot was separated from him, “Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, ¹⁵ for all the land which you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring forever. ¹⁶ I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can count the dust of the earth, then your offspring may also be counted. ¹⁷ Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its width; for I will give it to you.” ¹⁸ Abram moved his tent, and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to Yahweh.

Proverbs 14:27-15:4

²⁷ The fear of Yahweh is a fountain of life, turning people from the snares of death. ²⁸ In the multitude of people is the king’s glory, but in the lack of people is the destruction of the prince. ²⁹ He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a quick temper displays folly. ³⁰ The life of the body is a heart at peace, but envy rots the bones. ³¹ He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him. ³² The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but in death, the righteous has a refuge. ³³ Wisdom rests in the heart of one who has understanding, and is even made known in the inward part of fools. ³⁴ Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. ³⁵ The king’s favor is toward a servant who deals wisely, but his wrath is toward one who causes shame. ¹ A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. ² The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of fools gush out folly. ³ Yahweh’s eyes are everywhere, keeping watch on the evil and the good. ⁴ A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but deceit in it crushes the spirit.
